The heat and the cold have that thing of inevitable denunciation of the unjust. When a city burns or freezes, inequality emerges and there is no way to hide it. The summer in Santiago de Chile, in addition to boiling over with inequality and mismanagement, this 2021 brings extra ingredients of a social outbreak that does not cease, of a pandemic that is worsening, endorsed by the authorities who seem to forget that below, crushed in the recesses of capitalism, there are human beings and that without them nothing is possible, not the market, not consumption, not labour, nothing.

Arequipa, Peru is a fascinating place. In the summer I spent there studying Spanish in 2014, I grew to love its friendly people, its delicious local dishes like
rocotto relleno, and the city’s beautiful mix of influences from indigenous culture and Spanish missionaries, all with many amenities of modern life.
It has its quirks too. Driving around was the kind of event that brought one face-to-face with mortality. There weren’t really any stop signs that I can recall. There were very few traffic lights. And as one got to the outskirts of town, herds of livestock would frequently rumble right past a few cars.
Accra, Ghana
In this episode, weâre headed to Accra with Akosua Shirley and Enyo Bruku, curators at Tastemakers Africa. âWith the opening of the Ghanian borders, I am hoping that business will pick up for these local artisans who depend on the tourism industry,â Shirley says. Tag along as they walk through Black Star Square, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and the Center for National Culture before ending the day with a cold drink in Jamestown, one of the oldest districts in Accra. âThis whole neighborhood is absolutely epic,â says Shirley. âIt overlooks the Ussher Fort, the James Fort, and the beautiful Gulf of Guinea.â
