(LAWRENCE, Ind.) – The Lawrence Police Department has unveiled a monument at its new
headequarters, honoring the department’s only line-of-duty death.
Craig Herbert died 16 years ago when a 15-year-old boy stole a van and led police on a 100-mile-

Carson, Spartz Take Different Approaches to Honoring Police
WASHINGTON, D.C. Two Indiana representatives spoke of the U.S. House floor during a special hour for National Police Week Wednesday. Both Andre Carson and Victoria Spartz chose to honor law enforcement officers. Carson also advocated for police reforms.
“Though nothing can bring back the lives that have been lost or ease the collective grief that we feel, we take comfort in knowing that we will never for get them for the sacrifices they made,” said Carson (D), a former police officer.
He mentioned specifically Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Breann Leath, shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in April 2020.

The annual Peace Officers Memorial Service is hosted by the local Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents officers across Marion County. It invites family of slain officers to come together and remember their loved ones.
For some, the grief was perhaps more raw than others. Tom and Jennifer Leath sat near the front of the room just over a year after their daughter, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath, was killed in the line of duty.
