Indiana Women s Prison mother-baby unit named for fallen officer Breann Leath - WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather

Patrol Officer Breann Leath (Photo Provided/IMPD East/Facebook) To mark the anniversary, the Indiana Department of Corrections is having an official rededication ceremony of the Maternal-Child Health Unit to rename it in Officer Leath’s honor. A memorial plaque will also be unveiled. The Leath family, DOC executive staff, other state officials and IMPD officers will be in attendance. The Officer Breann Leath Maternal Child Unit was originally named the Wee Ones Nursery, opening in April of 2008. Officer Leath worked in the unit from January 2015 to October 2016, according to the IDOC. Staff offer prenatal and post-partum education, Safe Sleep courses, car seat safety classes and infant nutrition services during the mothers’ stay.

On Friday morning, the Maternal Child Health Unit at the Indiana Women s Prison was rededicated as the Leath Unit. The reality series Born Behind Bars featured Leath s work with the Wee Ones Nursery at the prison. According to the DOC website, the nursery is a voluntary program for pregnant offenders who meet certain criteria for participation.  Those interviewed in the video say Leath truly cared about the babies and their mothers in the nursery.
