NORTH PORT, FL With 87-year-old Zyggy Szymczak staring down homelessness, it took the North Port community just a few weeks to raise around $28,000 to purchase and move him into a new trailer.
Until mid-December, though, the aging Polish concert pianist, who was diagnosed with dementia, didn t have many options. For decades, he d lived at Myakka River Park at the intersection of U.S. 41 and River Road, but the trailer park had a new owner with redevelopment plans.
COVID-19 numbers continue to rise

Five area towns are in the state’s “red,” or highest-risk, category this week because of a surge in numbers of positive COVID-19 cases, according to its weekly report.
Greenfield, Montague, Deerfield and Orange in Franklin County and Athol in the North Quabbin region saw numbers of cases rise over the past two weeks. The state reports that Greenfield has 134 cases, Montague has 46, Deerfield has 36, Orange has 26 and Athol has 78 cases. There are currently only three towns reporting zero cases: Hawley, Monroe and New Salem. State numbers can lag, so the numbers in each town could be off some.

Polish American Club, others in South Deerfield close after possible COVID-19 exposure

SOUTH DEERFIELD The South Deerfield Polish American Club is closed temporarily after it was learned that someone associated with it may have been exposed to COVID-19 during Thanksgiving week.
Select Board Chairwoman Carolyn Shores Ness said she had not heard of anyone displaying symptoms, but the club at 46 South Main St. has shut its doors until further notice.
Shores Ness also said The Tavern Sports and the Hotel Warren, which share many of the same clientele with the Polish American Club, agreed to temporarily close as well. She said the town is doing contact tracing.
