Here s how local high school seniors are celebrating despite COVID-19

View Comments Ali Guenther said she was lying awake in bed recently when the idea to bring back a COVID-friendly way to celebrate senior year came to her. “I was like, ‘We should have a car parade,’” said the 18-year-old, soon to be a Port Huron Northern graduate. “‘How did you even go about starting it?’” Ali recalled asking. “And she was like, ‘Girl, make a Facebook page. People will join it.’” And they did. As of early last week, nearly 250 had RSVP’d to the May 22 celebration, which will follow Port Huron’s traditional parade route through the city’s downtown ending at Pine Grove Park.

Port Huron Schools to continue 100% virtual for all students Port Huron Times Herald Port Huron Schools will continue 100% remote learning for all students pre-kindergarten through 12th grade for at least the next week after the district’s board of education signed off on the plan Monday. Superintendent Jamie Cain notified families in a letter Tuesday that the district would continue with the virtual learning plan. The decision is the latest in a series of several in 2021 as COVID-19 cases rose in the district and across St. Clair County. “Daily Zoom classes will continue and all coursework will be posted in Schoology,” Cain wrote. “Students in our virtual program will continue in their regular manner. The board of education will re-evaluate this decision during a special meeting next week.”

Hannah Winkler s dreams live on through SC4 scholarship

Port Huron Times Herald High school seniors planning to attend SC4 this fall have a scholarship opportunity thanks to the legacy of a 23-year-old Kimball Township woman who had a passion for children, dance and animals.  Applications are being taken for the Hannah R. Winkler Memorial Scholarship. High school seniors must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for the $1,000 award. Applications can be found at https://hannahwinkler.org/scholarship.  Winkler died in December 2019 following complications from open-heart surgery.  She graduated from Port Huron High School in 2014 and went on to earn a degree in early childhood education from SC4 in 2016. Winkler was crowned Miss Teen Detroit in 2015, where her platform was invisible disabilities.
