Matthew Cooperâs paintings look out over every artist and musician at this yearâs Art & Soul in the Artsgarden which, in turn, overlooks the intersection of Washington and Illinois Streets in downtown Indianapolis. The gaze of the three portraits, like the artists performing, presents pride, elegance, and strength.  Â
As part of Cooperâs contribution as a 2021 Art & Soul Featured Visual Artist, his murals, painted this past summer for the Murals for Racial Justice project, located on the Old City Hall Building, were recreated as panels for the Artsgarden stage.Â
Cooper is clear when explaining that vision and what he hopes his art portrays. His inspiration comes from ideals that connect individuals and communities. âBlack identity, family, diversity â that speaks to me,â he says. âThat speaks to all of us. You donât have to say Black.â
