It s been over a year since the coronavirus pandemic swept across Thailand. Restaurants, bars and other businesses have shut shop in droves while nightlife districts have turned into ghost towns. The streets are eerily empty while rental ads and closing signs are spotted on dusty iron shutters. Countless people who work in the nightlife and entertainment industries have been among the first groups to be most severely hit by the effects of Covid-19 and yet, they also seem to be the last group to receive any empathy from the powers that be. Their places of work have been temporarily closed or restricted to a point that they can no longer earn a livelihood. But empathy isn t what they want (or need), they are demanding accountability from the authorities. Let s hear what they have to say.

The confirmed case of a detained pro-democracy protester has sparked concerns about a new Covid-19 cluster at Bangkok Remand Prison that may also involve the Criminal Court.
The news first came from Sureerat Chiwarak, the mother of protest co-leader Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak. She said she had been told by a corrections official that Chukiat Sangwong, known as “Justin” for his penchant for the signature style of American singer Justin Timberlake, had Covid.
Man accused of lese majeste arrested

A man accused of committing lese majeste in Chiang Mai has been arrested in Nonthaburi.
Police apprehended Pornchai Wimolsupawong, 38, a Mae Hong Hon resident, in front of a condominium building on Rattanathibet Road in Muang district on Wednesday evening, Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Pakapong Pongpetra said on Thursday.
Mr Pornchai was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by the Chiang Mai Provincial Court for alleged lese majete and computer crime.
He allegedly committed the offences in front of Maejo police station in Chiang Mai.
The suspect is also alleged to have spray-painted the fence outside the Royal Thai Police Office on Nov 18 last year, and allegedly also set fire to a picture of His Majesty the King and other material in front of the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek Road on March 6, Pol Lt Gen Pakapong said.

The governor of Klongprem Central Prison has been transferred to an inactive post over the torching of a large portrait of His Majesty the King by protesters outside the prison last Sunday.
Justice permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-at signed the order on Thursday afternoon, the justice minister s secretary, Thanakrit Jit-areerat, said.
