Springfield Police Announce Creation of New Firearms Investigation Unit, Realignment of Narcotics Unit Investigative Resources
SPRINGFIELD Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, in a continued effort to modernize the department and move the Springfield Police Department forward, is today announcing the creation of a Firearms Investigation Unit to address the uptick in gun violence in the city and the reallocation of narcotics investigation resources to regional and state partnerships.

SPRINGFIELD Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, in a continued effort to modernize the department and move the Springfield Police Department forward, is today announcing the creation of a Firearms Investigation Unit to address the uptick in gun violence in the city and the reallocation of narcotics investigation resources to regional and state partnerships.
Sousa had been the acting deputy chief since April.
“Traditionally, policing is a noble and honorable profession,” Sousa said in the news release. “In today’s landscape I am committed to ensuring we continue our traditions of integrity and service for all.”
Sousa jointed the department in 1994 and became part of the Narcotics Division in 2000. He was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force in 2001. He was later assigned to the Gang Unit from 2006-2009. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2009, to Lieutenant in 2012, and to Captain 2017.
Born in Sao Miguel in the Azores, Sousa came to New Bedford with his family in the 1980s. He graduated from New Bedford High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice from Western New England College, according to the release.
8 arrests made, thousands of marijuana plants seized amid multiple searches in High Desert

Several individuals from the High Desert, San Bernardino and Mexico were arrested during the serving of search warrants at six illegal cannabis grows in the Victor Valley, according to sheriff’s officials.
The searches began at approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, with San Bernardino County sheriff’s investigators seizing 5,043 marijuana plants and 48 pounds of processed marijuana over the course of the day.
The warrants were served by the sheriff department’s Marijuana Enforcement Team and deputies from the Victor Valley Station.
The suspects, who were cited on suspicion of illegal cannabis cultivation, included Phelan resident John McCandless, 67, in the 6900 block of Buckthorne Road in Phelan, Victor Valley station officials said.
New Bedford Acting Deputy Chief to Stay in Permanent Role
Police announced the appointment Wednesday afternoon.
Sousa has been the acting Deputy Chief since April.
According to the statement, he joined the police department in 1994 and became part of the Narcotics Division in 2000.

Born in Saint Michael, Azores, Sousa immigrated with his family to New Bedford in the 1980s.
