New Bedford Acting Deputy Chief to Stay in Permanent Role
Police announced the appointment Wednesday afternoon.
Sousa has been the acting Deputy Chief since April.
According to the statement, he joined the police department in 1994 and became part of the Narcotics Division in 2000.

He became a member of the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force in 2001, and was later assigned to the Gang Unit from 2006-2009.
Born in Saint Michael, Azores, Sousa immigrated with his family to New Bedford in the 1980s.
He graduated from New Bedford High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Criminal Justice from Western New England College.
