AN INCREASE in Covid cases is causing disruption in the final week of the school year with proms cancelled and pupils and staff having to self-isolate. Most Dorset schools are scheduled to break up for the summer holidays on Friday but the final week of school, which is traditionally reserved for sports days, summer fêtes and other events, has been one of disappointment for many students and teachers amid rising coronavirus cases. Organisers of the proms at Weymouth s Budmouth Academy have decided to postpone all three of the planned events - which were for Year 11 (class of 2021), Year 11 (class of 2020), and Year 13 - which were scheduled for today, tomorrow and Friday at the sailing academy.
FOUR more Dorset schools have confirmed Covid cases. The Gryphon School in Sherborne, Lytchett Minster School, Piddle Valley Church of England First School in Piddletrenthide, and The Sir John Colfox Academy in Bridport have all confirmed at least one case of Covid-19. They join a growing list of schools that have had cases of coronavirus, including Symondsbury Primary School in Bridport, where 47 students and three staff members, including the headteacher, are isolating. Adam Shelley, headteacher of The Sir John Colfox Academy, said: We just have three students who are isolating. We have kept all of our safety measures in place, including school bubbles and mandatory mask wearing which has been good as it has stopped us having any outbreaks.
AN ENTIRE year group plus the headteacher from a Dorset school are isolating after one confirmed Covid case. The whole of Year 4 from Milborne St Andrew First School is isolating after one case of coronavirus was confirmed. The headteacher plus two other members of staff are also isolating, as well as a handful of younger students. A spokesman for the school said: We have had one confirmed Covid case and one parent is fairly sure their child has it, they are just waiting for the results of their Covid test. We have all of Year 4 isolating - 19 pupils - as well as four students in the Key Stage 1 group.
