This yearâs festival is being organized by the Greater Beauregard Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with FOX 29 SWLA ABC. Previous festivals were organized by the Beauregard Parish Tourist Commission.

âThe Beauregard Parish Tourist Commission hosted it 14 years. We are honored that they chose us to carry the torch to continue the festival, which is part of the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals,â said Lisa Adams, Chamber director.

The festival has deep roots in Beauregard Parish, where watermelons are legendary. The âSugartown Watermelonâ has been a celebrated fruit for decades. The first watermelon festival is believed to have been held in Sugartown in the 1950s or 1960s.
‘National Nurses Week’ proclaimed in the City of DeRidder

DeRidder Mayor Misty Clanton on Thursday, May 6, proclaimed May 6-12 as “National Nurses Week” in the City of DeRidder.
The Mayor was joined by nurses with Beauregard Health System in DeRidder and Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital at Fort Polk for the reading of the proclamation at DeRidder City Hall.
National Nurses Week is recognized annually as a way to honor the nation’s indispensable nurses and their tireless commitment to the health and welfare of their communities.
Nurses spend their careers treating and comforting the sick, welcoming new lives into our world and caring for people at the end of their lives.

School Closures
McNeese State University course instruction will be online Monday, but th campus will officially reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Offices and the library will open at 7:30 a.m. and resume normal hours.

Trash Pickup
City of Lake Charles garbage collection has resumed. Thursday and Friday routes will be collected on Saturday, February 20. Every effort will be made to collect all of Friday’s normal pickups on Saturday, however, if crews are unable to complete the route, they will do a makeup pass on Monday, February 22.
