4.7 quake 26 Feb 1:45 am (GMT +8)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Friday 26 February 2021 at 1:45 am local time near General Santos, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, as reported by Indonesia s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Lessons of Fukushima must not be forgotten

On Feb. 14, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture. The fact that the Fukushima Dai-ichi and Fukushima Dai-ni nuclear power plants have been decommissioned, and the Onagawa, Tokai Dai-ni, Higashidori and Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plants are not operational might have prevented a nuclear accident.
Following the March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and resulting Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan’s nuclear reactors were shut down in stages for safety checks. In June 2012, Japan for a while ran on zero nuclear power, which it did again for 11 months from September 2013.
Starting March 11, 2021, ShakeAlert-powered earthquake early warning alerts will be available for delivery directly to wireless devices in Oregon.
In May 2021, Washington state will follow suit and complete the ShakeAlert public alerting rollout across the entire West Coast. California enabled ShakeAlert-powered alerts in October 2019.
