My friend, the late Phil Dodds, was a natural born storyteller. News editor of the Picton Gazette for 42 years, he was the early answer to Google. Reporting the news was his life and each colourful story that came across his desk was mentally filed for future reference.
Hired in 1969. as the Belleville Intelligencer’s bureau reporter in Prince Edward County, I had few qualifications for the job. I did not drive and my past work experience consisted of writing a few feature stories for the Gazette and the Kingston Whig Standard. On many occasions, Phil came to my rescue whenever I needed background information on a story. Often, when I asked a question, he would relate a long and colourful tale for my enlightenment. I found myself listening to his recollections with great enjoyment. He was a living encyclopedia of Prince Edward County.
