The intersection as it was in April before the temporary upgrade work . That work included the closure of an access way to the NMIT Richmond campus, which is on the opposite side of Lower Queen St from Berryfield Drive. The main carriageway was widened while the Berryfield Drive traffic Island was shortened and a new turning marked in the newly created space. Council transportation manager Jamie McPherson said the outcome would not have been possible without the support and agreement of NMIT. McPherson urged drivers to take care while they familiarised themselves with the new intersection layout. The temporary fix comes after the delay to the planned permanent upgrade sparked concern among councillors and other members of the community.

The increasingly busy intersection of Lower Queen St and Berryfield Drive at Richmond West was earmarked for a permanent upgrade in the 2021-22 year – a project that looks likely to be deferred for at least a year.
Temporary measures are to be considered for the increasingly busy intersection of Lower Queen St and Berryfield Drive at Richmond West as a land purchase delay holds up plans for a permanent upgrade. The intersection, which is a key access point for the large Richmond West residential development, was earmarked to undergo an estimated $2.8 million revamp in the 2021-22 financial year that includes the addition of traffic signals as well as measures to cater for pedestrians, cyclists and buses.
