Bend Cultural Tourism Fund announces nearly $320,000 in grants BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) The Bend Cultural Tourism Commission announced Wednesday 20 grants for Bend cultural tourism-focused activities taking place September 2021 through June 2022, awarding a total of $319,500.  The funds will help local organizations leverage marketing resources to attract more cultural tourists during the shoulder seasons and winter months – a time of year when the city’s tourism industry is down yet the vibrant cultural activities so central to Bend’s character are still going strong, according to the announcement, which continues below. The program started in 2015 and normally awards closer to $200,000 annually. However, due to pandemic restrictions for travel and events, the program went on hiatus in 2020. Cascade Relays Offers ‘Big Butte Challenge’ Cascade Relays invites runners and hikers to reach the summit of 5 local buttes in Central Oregon, offering “The Big Butte Challenge.” According to their website, the event safely brings people together to accomplish one common goal: to reach the summit of 5 Buttes in Central Oregon. Between March 20 and May 31, participants hike or run each butte, on their own schedule, using GPS tracking to submit times to the virtual results portal.  After each summit, participants can visit the sponsored butte brewery and receive a pint on the house. The five breweries participating: 10 Barrel Brewing, Wild Ride Brewing, Bend Brewing Company, Worthy Brewing and Deschutes Brewery. More Info Register

State Adjusts Student Learning Options The Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Education released an update to the Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance.  Right now, about 175,000 students in Oregon are attending school in person. Governor Kate Brown issued an executive order requiring all Oregon public schools to offer universal access to hybrid or full in-person instruction by the weeks of March 29 for grades K-5, and April 19 for grades 6-12.   What does this all mean? Some key changes from the guidance: There’s a simplified table showing how schools will use county case rates, case counts and test positive rates to decide when to offer on-site or hybrid learning and when they might limit instruction to distance learning only.
