Residence hall at COCC will reopen this fall as the college readies for incremental return to in-person learning
Balancing a mini-fridge on your shoulder is an art form. And Joshua Garrett, a stocky-looking member of Central Oregon Community College s rugby team, has downright perfected it. Twenty fridges so far, he said, almost disappointed in his tally, admitting that it s down from 29 last year. Then he brightens, spying another one, and quickly strides off. I m going for 21!
Move-in day at COCC s Wickiup Residence Hall on the Bend campus is at first glance like the scene at a busy airport but with a lively vibe and a 20-person rugby team volunteering to help you haul your luggage. As cars unload and students and their parents try to make sense of the situation, they find a small army of friendly, green-shirted COCC staff fanned out greeters, directors and movers helping things flow, keeping the beat.

Stunning sunsets, panoramic mountain views, twinkling city lights Awbrey Butte evokes images of stunning sunsets, panoramic mountain views, twinkling city lights, colorful sunrises, towering ponderosas and roaming deer, to name a few. Living there feels more about the environment and the surroundings rather than the actual house. Nature surrounds you, creating a sense of peace and allowing one some solitude if needed. It seldom feels crowded. It is hard not to love this neighborhood, and if you happen to move here, there s a good chance you ll stay for a long time. Awbrey Butte, once known as Awbrey Heights, was named after a legendary Bend pioneer named Marshall Clay Awbrey. Awbrey was a Missourian who fought in the Mexican War and who settled in Bend around 1870. He farmed the areas where Harmon Park and Kenwood School are located today before moving to the Tumalo area. It was said he would kiss a 5- or 10-piece coin goodbye before handing it to a clerk. Many landmarks
The Deschutes River Trail is always a fine destination to walk off a holiday meal, get some sunshine or just spend some time in nature. And if youâre in the vicinity of downtown Bend, First Street Rapids Park, located just blocks to the north, makes for quick and easy access.
Situated on the west side of the river beneath Awbrey Butte, the Deschutes River Trail affords views of paddlers both sitting down and standing along with wildlife that includes ducks and at least one swan that appears to be living below the rapids.
From First Street Rapids, with just a short stretch of on-street walking, itâs possible to connect to Sawyer Park, which also straddles both sides of the river, and continue north to Archie Briggs Canyon.
