World s largest crane completes second lift at Hinkley Point C nuclear plant

The ring - which is 17m tall and 47m wide - is now being prepared for the final lift into the first reactor building. It was constructed in factory conditions in the bunker – one of the innovations to improve quality on the project. Prefabrication inside these bunkers reduces the need to work at height or in bad weather and the work can be completed and checked in a controlled setting.

7/7 The world’s largest land-based crane, ‘Big Carl’, has completed another mega lift at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant site. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the second of three containment rings that will sit around the nuclear reactors was lifted into place. The ring is 47 metres in diameter, 17 metres high and weighs 308 tonnes. The component was lighter than the first containment ring which weighed 382 tonnes and was installed in December. EDF said the second ring was constructed in two-thirds of the time it took to make the first one thanks to lessons learned in the earlier construction process. EDF Hinkley Point C managing director Stuart Crooks said: “As we build the first UK European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) we are learning and improving all the time. This is leading to improved productivity as we build Hinkley Point C’s twin reactors. We will use that experience to underpin our plans for two more identical reactors at Sizewell C.”
