Sarens to expand USA business operations with increased presence in southern states and projects on the northeastern coast

EDF has again revised the schedule and budget for the commissioning of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant under construction in Somerset, England. The start of electricity generation from unit 1 is now expected in June 2026, compared with end-2025 as initially announced in 2016. Delays arising from the pandemic will also increase the cost of the project by GBP500 million (USD684 million) to GBP23 billion.

In this context, a detailed review of schedule and cost has been performed to estimate the impact of the pandemic so far.

Big Carl completes largest lift so far at Hinkley
The first of three prefabricated steel rings to form the reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point C has been lifted into position by the world’s largest crane, dubbed “Big Carl”.
Moving the 575t ring, which is 17m tall and has a diameter of 47m, is the biggest lift undertaken at the Hinkley site so far by the Sarens SGC-250 crane. The 5,000t capacity crane, which runs on rails, is expected to complete a 1,600t lift later in the project.
The ring was manufactured on site in a bunker under factory conditions to ensure the quality and called for Big Carl to reach out over 160m to position the ring during a night shift timed to take advantage of low wind conditions.

The worldâs largest crane has this week completed its biggest ever lift at Hinkley Point C near Burnham-On-Sea.
The super-crane, called Big Carl, lifted a total weight of 575 tonnes to install the first of three massive prefabricated steel rings which form the reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor.
The 17m tall ring with a diameter of 47m â was lifted out of a bunker where it was constructed in factory conditions â one of the innovations to improve quality on the project.
Big Carl reached out 160m to put it in place during a night lift  â timed to take advantage of lighter winds during a four-day operation.
