Big Carl takes the strain: World s largest crane lifts steel ring into place at Hinkley Point C

Big Carl takes the strain: World s largest crane lifts 1,600-ton steel ring as Britain s latest nuclear power plant takes shape at Hinkley Point The 820ft tall crane is being used in the construction of a new nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point C, Somerset It will help to lift a 55ft tall 154ft wide metal ring on to the structure - the second of three for the big build The prefabricated steel ring forms part of reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor of the power plant Big Carl will lift more than 500 prefabricated steel and concrete elements - weighing up to 1,600 tonnes

World s largest crane completes second lift at Hinkley Point C near Burnham-On-Sea

World’s largest crane completes second lift at Hinkley Point C near Burnham-On-Sea The world’s largest land-based crane, “Big Carl”, completed its second major lift last week at Hinkley Point C near Burnham-On-Sea. The second of three prefabricated steel rings to form the reinforced cylinder around the new nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point C has been lifted from the bunker in which it was constructed to a lay-down area. The ring – which is 17m tall and 47m wide – is now being prepared for the final lift into the first reactor building. It was constructed in factory conditions in the bunker – one of the innovations to improve quality on the project.

7/7 The world’s largest land-based crane, ‘Big Carl’, has completed another mega lift at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant site. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the second of three containment rings that will sit around the nuclear reactors was lifted into place. The ring is 47 metres in diameter, 17 metres high and weighs 308 tonnes. The component was lighter than the first containment ring which weighed 382 tonnes and was installed in December. EDF said the second ring was constructed in two-thirds of the time it took to make the first one thanks to lessons learned in the earlier construction process. EDF Hinkley Point C managing director Stuart Crooks said: “As we build the first UK European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) we are learning and improving all the time. This is leading to improved productivity as we build Hinkley Point C’s twin reactors. We will use that experience to underpin our plans for two more identical reactors at Sizewell C.”
