Why Spanish grape variety mencia might be the next big thing in Australian red wine

Save Share Could the Spanish grape mencia be the Next Big Thing in red wine in Australia? McLaren Vale winemaker Alan Varney certainly thinks so. “I’m really excited by the variety,” says Varney. “It ticks a lot of boxes. I think it’s got a great future.” For the past couple of years, Varney has made only a few dozen bottles of mencia each vintage, using grapes he buys from nearby Oliver’s Taranga vineyard, the first grower to plant the variety in Australia back in 2011. But he’s so certain mencia has great potential that he recently organised a get-together of half-a-dozen winemakers now producing a red wine from it in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills.

A vine romance: Meet new Good Food drinks writer Katie Spain

A vine romance: Meet new Good Food drinks writer Katie Spain Katie Spain Photo: Ben MacMahon This week, Good Food welcomes a new drinks writer to our team. Please meet Katie Spain as she tells us her favourite things to imbibe right now. I never set out to be a drinks writer. As a dairy farmer s daughter growing up in rural South Australia, I saw more udders and bovine rear ends than vines and wine barrels. My parents indulged a little; Coolabah cask white for Mum, big Coonawarra reds for Dad. On Friday nights after milking wrapped up, I d drink VB with the workers, or (if we were feeling fancy) port and Coke out of a plastic cup. It was hardly a highbrow upbringing but it fostered a love of the land and the people who farm it thoughtfully.

Stop pining for Italy and head to the Adelaide Hills

Stop pining for Italy and head to the Adelaide Hills Once thought of as a day-trip destination, this innovative wine region is bouncing back from a traumatic 16 months with the full experience for visitors. Barristers Block is buzzing after a difficult 16 months.  Ben Macmahon Share Some of the best holidays I’ve had were with groups of friends and family in Italy, France and Spain, hiring a big house where we could all stay, heading out to wineries, restaurants and markets by day, returning each night to cook and drink together. Now that overseas is off the menu for a while, many Australian wine tourists are looking closer to home for their next group trip away. High on the list of must-visit regions is the Adelaide Hills. And as I discovered when I spent a couple of days there last month, wineries in the Hills are adapting well to this surge in demand: improving their food offering, expanding accommodation options and developing new, immersive wine experiences.

Goose killer also accused of common assault

The footage allegedly also showed the golf cart being used to do doughnuts in the grass. A CQ man is charged with ramming a flock of geese with a golf buggy and killing one of the birds. Photo Ben Macmahon The court heard Mr Poulsen’s lawyers and police prosecution were in the process of compiling an agreed statement of facts. A brief of evidence was ordered for the assault charge, which was listed for hearing on August 25. The animal cruelty charge will be dealt with once the assault charge was finalised. The case will be mentioned again in July.
