Kathy Mexted took the first steps towards learning to fly as a teenager when her father handed her the controls of his light plane for the first time.
Since then she s been fascinated by flight, and the act of flying.
Recently she began investigating the life stories of women like Nancy Bird Walton, who was the first woman to fly commercially in Australia.
Later after a stint barnstorming, she made her way to Bourke where she flew a nursing sister on her rounds across the outback.
Kathy also discovered more about the story of a pilot named Deborah Wardley who forged a stellar career in the skies, despite being told by Ansett that women couldn t be pilots, and Gaby Kennard, the first woman to fly solo around the world.

Despite everything the world is going through right now, if a year you have great expectations from starts off with a premier air carrier appointing an all-woman crew to fly its longest nonstop flight, hope wells up. Two days later, today, January 11, marks the day aviatrix extraordinare Amelia Earhart famously flew solo from Hawaii to California, in the process registering her name in history books as the first person to do so.

Women will be inducted as pilots in the Army Aviation Corps from next year, Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Tuesday. Till now, women are only part of ground duties in the Army Aviation Corps. Women pilots would be flying helicopters to forward locations and be part of operations at the borders, the Army Chief said, adding that the proposal has been cleared.
The Indian Air Force has 10 women fighter pilots. In the Indian Navy, women pilots are flying the Dornier aircraft and also as observers onboard helicopters and P8I surveillance aircraft. Other than the 10 fighter pilots, the IAF has 111 women pilots who fly transport planes and choppers.

In a historic move, Air India s longest direct route flight with the all-women pilot team landed at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru from San Francisco, flying over the North Pole and covering a distance of about 16,000 kilometers. Air India Captain Zoya Agarwal, commanded the flight over North Pole.
Before the flight Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Puri reacted over the history in making and had said, Air India s woman power flies high around the world, our Nari Shakti achieves a historic first. It was the first direct non-stop flight between the west coast of the United States and southern India.

New Delhi: Air India s longest direct route flight with the all-women cockpit crew landed at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru from San Francisco on Monday, flying over the North Pole and taking the Atlantic route to cover a distance of about 16,000 kilometres.
The four women pilots Captains Zoya Aggarwal, Papagari Thanmai, Akansha Sonaware and Shivani Manhas were operating a Boeing 777 200 (long range or LR) VT-ALG named ‘Kerala’.
