Hospitals charging exorbitant rates

Hospitals across KhyberPakhtunkhwa (K-P) have introduced exorbitant charges for their services after Covid19 treatment was included in Sehat Insaf Card. For a single night in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) some hospitals are now charging Rs50,000 per night on a par with the well-known modern private hospitals despite the fact that government hospitals are ill-equipped and their services and facilities are not comparable with the private hospitals.
Sources in the Health Department told The Express Tribune the treatment of Covid19 has been included in the Sehat Insaf Card and after this inclusion the private hospitals as well as public hospitals are now charging very high rates in order to make money. “There is no uniform policy for fixing the rates. The largest health facility of its kind in the Khyber Pakthunkhwa (K-P) Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) has been at the heart of yet another controversy as it stopped the free provision of 11 types of medicine at its emergency department, forcing the general public to buy them from the open market.
For the past nine years LRH is no stranger to scandals that are seldom reported in the media and this is yet another controversial step on the part of the hospital management who always makes tall claims about the performance of the hospital despite the ever increasing complaints of the patients and staff alike. Director Emergency Department Dr Muhammad Adeel Iqbal has issued a formal notification in this regard.
