Columnist Susan Wozniak: Making peace with the ghosts of Christmases past

I attended a Catholic high school in a suburb of Detroit. It was a new school and I was in the second graduating class. We lacked many things that public high schools in tonier suburbs took for granted, like swimming pools, sophisticated science labs and bands. However, we had Sister Patricia who taught a one credit music appreciation class to freshmen, as well as English, directed the chorus, and was faculty moderator for the Drama Club.
We loved Sister Pat. A parishioner saw her activities and her drama and music students as a way to occupy himself while recovering from a heart attack. A professional musician, he had what was called a Type A personality. He convinced everyone that we needed to put on a musical version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” called “The Stingiest Man in Town.” I played the Ghost of Christmas Past.
Buche de Noel The 2020 Christmas season has fallen victim to the same pandemic restrictions as Thanksgiving. Because large indoor gatherings promote the possibility of infection, most of us will spend the day only with those in our immediate household. We stay home and don’t travel to visit family. There will be no baking cookies with grandma. We keep our holiday small and set a table for two or three instead of ten or twelve. We mail gifts to relatives and visit with family via a computer screen. Those are the sacrifices we make to stay healthy this year. But we can still hear the jingling of Salvation Army kettles. Homes are decorated in red and green. Christmas cards are sent to cheer us. Carols play on the radio or CD players.
Fabulous desserts for the holidays 70 Recipes
Life is uncertain. Make dessert first.

Remember how, as a kid, you would painstakingly eat every last carrot and pea on your dinner plate only to have your mom give you a slice of cantaloupe or a banana at the end of the meal and call it dessert? Don’t get me wrong. I love fruit. But fruit is not dessert, even when eaten at the end of a meal. As I child, I had difficulty articulating the argument, but some years ago, my friend Zvi laid out his dessert rule for me. For something to qualify as dessert, at least two of three ingredients must be present: flour, sugar, chocolate. If it does not meet the criteria, it is a sweet treat, but it is not dessert.

With less than a week to go for Christmas, one may begin to wonder about finding the best seasonal goodies to fill up one’s Christmas plate. Now more than ever, a cheerful box of Christmas goodies is a great way to share love with friends and family.
This week, we put together a list of small businesses that offer these treats, while maintaining quality and hygiene without compromising on taste.
