Columnist Susan Wozniak: Making peace with the ghosts of Christmases past

I attended a Catholic high school in a suburb of Detroit. It was a new school and I was in the second graduating class. We lacked many things that public high schools in tonier suburbs took for granted, like swimming pools, sophisticated science labs and bands. However, we had Sister Patricia who taught a one credit music appreciation class to freshmen, as well as English, directed the chorus, and was faculty moderator for the Drama Club.
We loved Sister Pat. A parishioner saw her activities and her drama and music students as a way to occupy himself while recovering from a heart attack. A professional musician, he had what was called a Type A personality. He convinced everyone that we needed to put on a musical version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” called “The Stingiest Man in Town.” I played the Ghost of Christmas Past.
