COLOMBO, March 13 Sri Lanka will ban the wearing of the burqa and shut more than a thousand Islamic schools, a government minister said today, the latest actions affecting the country’s minority Muslim population.
Minister for public security Sarath Weerasekera told a news conference he had signed a paper yesterday for cabinet approval to ban the full face covering worn by some Muslim women on “national security” grounds.

SRI LANKA HAS announced plans to ban the wearing of burkas and said it would close more than 1,000 Islamic schools known as madrassas, citing national security.
In a move widely seen as “anti-Muslim” and “Islamophobic” by many the Sri Lankan government announced to ban “burqa” and close down over one thousand Islamic schools.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka announced on Saturday it will be making use of a controversial anti-terror law to deal with religious extremism that will see the detention of suspects for up to two years for deradicalisation .
Also, the government aims to outlaw the burqa, formalising a temporary ban imposed in April 2019 after deadly bomb attacks blamed on local militants.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa promulgated regulations allowing the detention of anyone suspected of causing acts of violence or religious, racial or communal disharmony or feelings of ill will or hostility between different communities .
