SAN ANTONIO – With openings in the jail, on patrol, and in court security, Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward says it has been harder to fill open positions in the past year than it used to be. “The problem has been just getting qualified applicants,” Soward said. “You know, sometimes you can get applicants, but we do a pretty thorough background check, and sometimes applicants don’t make it through the background check. So the quality of applicants has certainly dropped off, as well as the quantity of them.”

Comal River claims its first drowning victim this season

No further details were available Tuesday on Friday’s drowning on the Comal River that claimed the life of a 62-year-old New Mexico man. Police said Albert L. Aranda, 62, from Farmington, New Mexico did not immediately resurface after going through the city Tube Chute. He was pulled from the water but efforts to revive him at the scene and at a New Braunfels hospital were unsuccessful. David Ferguson, city communications coordinator, said New Braunfels police and fire units arrived on the scene around 3:15 p.m. Friday. “Officers arrived to find that lifeguards and citizens had pulled the man from the water and lifeguards performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived on the scene,” he said. “The man was then transported to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels where he was later pronounced deceased.”

Emergency responders were called to the New Braunfels Tube Chute at around 3:15 Friday afternoon after witnesses reported a man went under the water and did not immediately resurface. Police said several people and lifeguards on duty pulled 62-year-old Albert L. Aranda from Farmington, New Mexico from the water. Lifeguards performed CPR until paramedics were able to arrive.
