Mixture of pool chemicals leads to dangerous situation at Lancaster County home

Firefighters said a reaction involving pool chemicals caused a dangerous situation this weekend at a Lancaster County home.In 41 years of firefighting, Tim Kuntz said he has never seen anything like the chemical gas he encountered at Sunday s emergency call on New Danville Pike. It kind of looked like a Hollywood movie because steps, steps, disappeared into nothing, said Kuntz, who is with the New Danville Fire Company.The basement of Carmen Diaz s home was full of what looked like smoke but smelled like pool chemicals. It s poison chlorine gas. It s just like they used in World War I, and so this was bad stuff, Kuntz said.The fire company called in the county hazmat team to help, and department photographer Don Shenk caught it all on camera. Resident in critical condition after fire in Lancaster Township, two homes damaged

A Lancaster Township resident is in critical condition after a fire on Friday night, according to the Lancaster Township Fire Department Firefighters were dispatched at 10:29 p.m. for a dwelling that was on fire in the first block of Pickford Drive in Wedgewood Estates, off of New Danville Pike between Second Lock Road and Hoover Road, according to Capt. Greg Leaman. The resident of the home was taken to Lancaster General Hospital in critical condition and was then flown to a burn center for treatment. A neighbor returned home at around 10 p.m. and noticed the smell of smoke in the area. They first thought the smell was from a fire pit from a neighboring home, Leaman said.

Bicyclist hit by car in Lancaster County

Bicyclist hit by car in Lancaster County Updated 8:00 AM; A Millersville man was moderately injured when he was hit by a car Tuesday while out on a bike ride, police said. The 66-year-old bicyclist was riding south on the 2100 block of New Danville Pike in Pequea Township when he was hit by a 29-year-old Denver woman around 5 p.m., according to township police. Police said the bicyclist was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The driver was not injured. “Pennsylvania law dictates that drivers of vehicles must provide at least four feet of distance between their vehicle and the bicyclist and pass at a prudent and safe speed.  Also, bicyclists must adhere to all rules of the roadway the same as a motor vehicle.
