Dunedin burglars jailed 15 months for drunken crime spree

A Dunedin student who went to retrieve his stolen cellphone found the burglar who had raided his flat was less than apologetic.
Teremoana Taokia, 52, argued with the 20-year-old victim then gave him the phone back, after urinating on it.
He came before the Dunedin District Court yesterday after admitting three burglaries, all of which occurred during a drunken spree in the city s student sector on January 17.
His co-defendant Wayne Bennett, 39, pleaded guilty to two of the break-ins.

Staff have gathered at the Countdown supermarket for a blessing following the devastating knife attack on Monday.
A large group gathered at the Countdown Dunedin Central site blessing just after 11am with several police officers also in attendance.
They paused briefly outside - some people bowing their heads - before walking slowly into the building.
This is the first time they have entered the Cumberland St supermarket; which has been closed since the attack that left four people injured.

This is the first time they have entered the Cumberland St supermarket which has been closed since the attack which left four people injured.
In an update this morning, the Southern District Health Board said the conditions of the patients remained the same, three were in a serious but stable condition, and one was in a moderate condition.

The knives were found amongst blood samples that were taken and also things that were discarded at the scene, 1 NEWS reporter Lisa Davies says.

The three people injured in yesterday s supermarket stabbing remain in a serious but stable condition, police say.
A fourth person remains in a moderate condition, Southern police district commander Paul Basham told reporters.
All four required surgery but none were in intensive care. This is a positive sign; however, they have a long road ahead, Basham said.
He could not say how many stab wounds the victims had, saying the matter was before the courts.
Two police officers, including one who was off-duty, were in the supermarket at the time of the stabbing and intervened.
