Stabbing at Countdown apparently sounds like “profit” to some supermarkets
Rather than offering support to employees after last week’s stabbing at Countdown, a Dunedin supermarket asked workers to do extra shifts because the supermarket would be busy.
A worker at the supermarket spoke to Critic Te Arohi on condition of anonymity because “supermarket chains have no mercy on their workers.” They said “what happened at Countdown today has everyone on edge.”
A screenshot provided by the worker showed that their manager noted that Countdown was closed, which would make the supermarket busier, but did not acknowledge the stabbing or offer support.

Police are today examining the scene of yesterday’s attack in the Dunedin Central Countdown supermarket on Cumberland Street.
“Gathering evidence from the scene is one of our top priorities today. This includes photography, blood sampling and collection of any discarded items for further examination,” Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham says.
“We’ve also been working to identify and speak to as many witnesses as possible, and of course, the victims who remain front of mind.
“We are currently assessing how best to support them and their whānau.
“All four remain in hospital – one in a moderate condition and three others in a serious but stable condition.

The three people injured in yesterday s supermarket stabbing remain in a serious but stable condition, police say.
A fourth person remains in a moderate condition, Southern police district commander Paul Basham told reporters.
All four required surgery but none were in intensive care. This is a positive sign; however, they have a long road ahead, Basham said.
He could not say how many stab wounds the victims had, saying the matter was before the courts.
Two police officers, including one who was off-duty, were in the supermarket at the time of the stabbing and intervened.

New details of the horrific attack are emerging as more people present at the Dunedin Countdown supermarket share their accounts.
Two supermarket staff and a Corrections officer were among those injured.
Jenna McDowell said she was was in the toiletries aisle when she heard screaming. I kinda looked up and then realised that one of the staff members had been stabbed. He was just on top of her, stabbing her. She had blood around her face and I just kind of froze, Ms McDowell told TVNZ.
