Exposing the vulnerability of rural population to Covid-19, rain earlier this week in central and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh led to horror among masses as it uncovered mass shallow graves along the Ganga in different districts of the state.
Taking a serious note of the development, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has advised Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (the two most populous states) to immediately check the trend of burying bodies along the banks of the river as it could lead to further spread of infection.

The discovery has caused panic among people living in nearby areas. Scores of decomposing bodies laid uncovered in the Sangam area. For the last 2-3 months, people have been burying their dead here. Sand covering the bodies is blown away by strong winds, exposing the decomposing bodies. Predatory birds and dogs feast gather and feast on the remains. The government should make arrangements for proper burials, a local, Dina Yadav told ANI.

COVID-19: Centre asks states to prevent dumping of dead bodies in Ganga
The state pollution control boards were directed to monitor the water quality more frequently in consultations with the health departments.

The Centre said dumping of dead bodies in the Ganga and its tributaries has recently been reported, which is most undesirable and alarming .
The Centre directed Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Sunday to prevent dumping of dead bodies in the Ganga and its tributaries, and focus on their safe disposal and a dignified cremation after corpses were seen floating in these rivers following a spurt in the number of coronavirus cases.
