An unoccupied house in northern Berks is a total loss after fire, official says

The cause of pre-dawn Tuesday fire that heavily damaged an unoccupied house in Maidencreek Township is under investigation, fire officials said. Crews were dispatched at 4:01 a.m. to 225 E. Wesner Road, a single-story home about 400 feet north of Park Road, after a passerby saw flames coming through the roof and called 9-1-1, Chief Dan Miller of Blandon Fire Company said. The home was purchased about three weeks ago, and the new homeowners, Brian Gromis and Emily Bentz, were renovating it before moving in, Miller said. - Advertisement - Crews mounted an aggressive attack, but the fire had too much a head start, rendering the building a total loss, he said.

Route 73 in Maidencreek Township was closed for about two hours Thursday between Route 222 and Calcium Road after a crash involving two tractor-trailers, emergency officials said. No injuries were reported in the crash, which happened shortly before 11 a.m. between Ontelaunee Drive and Calcium Road near Lake Ontelaunee.
