An unoccupied house in northern Berks is a total loss after fire, official says

The cause of pre-dawn Tuesday fire that heavily damaged an unoccupied house in Maidencreek Township is under investigation, fire officials said. Crews were dispatched at 4:01 a.m. to 225 E. Wesner Road, a single-story home about 400 feet north of Park Road, after a passerby saw flames coming through the roof and called 9-1-1, Chief Dan Miller of Blandon Fire Company said. The home was purchased about three weeks ago, and the new homeowners, Brian Gromis and Emily Bentz, were renovating it before moving in, Miller said. - Advertisement - Crews mounted an aggressive attack, but the fire had too much a head start, rendering the building a total loss, he said.

The fire began in 181 Lakeview Lane and was reported by a neighbor, who alerted the homeowners, about 8:30 p.m., said Jarrod Emes, township emergency management coordinator. Flames were shooting through the roof when the first crew arrived in Blue Heron Village, formerly known as Christman Lake Homes, off Christman Road just west of Route 143, Emes said. - Advertisement - The flames extended to a neighboring home at 171 Lakeview.
