Guatamalan woman taking sanctuary at WMUMC granted stay of removal

Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – ICE has issued a Stay of Removal for a woman who has been in sanctuary at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church since October 2018. Maria Chavalan Sut came to the church after she received a deportation notice claiming she did not attend a July 2017 Immigration Court hearing she says of which she never received notice was happening. She says she fled her Guatamalan home to the United States after some men came to her house one early morning in late 2016, burned her house with she and her children inside, and demanded she relinquish her land. She’s seeking asylum here claiming her’s and her family’s lives are in danger if they return there. Her lawyer says this one-year stay is not the end of the ordeal, but an important step in she can stay safely here while her asylum is considered.
