CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Maria Chavalan Sut and her Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church family are celebrating her one year long stay of removal, recently granted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
âThank you so much, letâs celebrate,â Sutâs translator said on her behalf.
With the stay of removal, Chavalan Sut is no longer forced to stay inside the church out of fear of deportation.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Inside the walls of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Maria Chavalan Sut found a home.
Sheâs a refugee seeking asylum from Guatemala and is staying at the church in Charlottesville. Now, she can go outside, because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcementâs (ICE) just gave her a one-year-long Stay of Removal.
âMuy feliz,â Chavalan said in an interview. That translates to âvery happy.â
She continued, through a translator: âIt was wonderful news. It was news about my liberation.â
