SAN ANGELO The San Angelo City Council approved a measure Tuesday to allow city manager Daniel Valenzuela to enter negotiations for purchasing the Standard-Times building.
The measure passed unanimously, 7-0, for an amount not to exceed $950,000. The building has been on the market for about a year.
San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter said the city is exploring options to turn the building into a possible site for a new police station. We are excited about the opportunity that purchasing the Standard-Times building presents to the city, Gunter said. We have known for a long time that our police department has needed a new building.

On May 1, San Angelo will choose between three mayoral candidates. Incumbent Brenda Gunter, the city s first elected female mayor, will face two challengers: Silvara Lawson and Dietrick Tillis.
A win for Lawson would make her the second female mayor to hold that office. If Tillis is the victor, he would be the first Black mayor elected in San Angelo s history. Tillis is the first Black mayoral candidate, according to a spokesperson with San Angelo s local chapter of the NAACP.
