State Ag Department Earns $3 5 Million for Irrigation Conservation Project in Central Minnesota

(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has earned $3.5 million from the federal government to put toward a five-year project focused on implementing conservation measures on irrigated farmlands. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is granting the funds to the MDA and its partners to help farmers who use irrigation systems to water their crops in a way that better conserves groundwater. The “Implementing Innovative Irrigation Practices to Protect Groundwater Quality and Quantity” project’s partners include Central Lakes College, the University of Minnesota and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. It will focus on 20 Minnesota counties, including Benton, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Morrison, Otter Tail, Sherburne, Stearns and Todd.
