A new approach to preventing human-induced earthquakes

A new approach to preventing human-induced earthquakes July 28, 2021MIT When humans pump large volumes of fluid into the ground, they can set off potentially damaging earthquakes, depending on the underlying geology. This has been the case in certain oil- and gas-producing regions, where wastewater, often mixed with oil, is disposed of by injecting it back into the ground a process that has triggered sizable seismic events in recent years. Now MIT researchers, working with an interdisciplinary team of scientists from industry and academia, have developed a method to manage such human-induced seismicity, and have demonstrated that the technique successfully reduced the number of earthquakes occurring in an active oil field.

Earth sciences: Managing earthquakes triggered by oil production | Nature

Research Press Release Nature July 29, 2021 The development, testing and implementation of a method for managing earthquakes triggered by human activities is reported in Nature this week. The method was shown to manage triggered seismicity associated with the injection of waste water in the seismically active Val d’Agri oil field, Italy. Concern over seismicity (frequency, intensity and distribution of earthquakes) induced by human activities such as mining, water extraction or the injection of water into subsurface reservoirs has been growing in recent years. However, there is a lack of understanding as to how such earthquakes can be best managed. Bradford Hager and colleagues created a model using detailed subsurface information about the Val d’Agri oil field, the largest onshore oil field in western Europe, situated in an area of ongoing tectonic activity. They calibrated their model with records of hydrocarbon extraction and water injection rates and associated flu

Maine Compass: Anti-hydro is bad science, and won t address climate change

Maine Compass: Anti-hydro is bad science, and won’t address climate change The assertion that Canadian hydropower reservoir emissions are comparable to fossil fuel is false, writes a former PUC commissioner and an analyst for Hydro-Quebec. By Tom Welch and Alain Tremblay Share The New England Clean Energy Connect will deliver renewable electricity to Maine and New England from Hydro-Québec (HQ); it will reduce climate emissions; it will substantially benefit Maine’s economy; it will conform to rigorous environmental standards. These are conclusions from exhaustive scientific study and exhaustive review by objective institutions tasked with safeguarding the public interest.
