Teacher s pet contest raises money for charity

May 24, 2021 28 Long Meadow Elementary School (LMES) recently held their annual Teacher’s Pet Contest, raising $300 for Animals for Life in Naugatuck and $300 for Brass City Rescue Alliance (BCRA) which has a shelter at the transfer center in Middlebury. In addition, pet food, toys and treats were collected and given to the shelters. The contest has been continuously held for the past 16 years, with the exception of last school year when buildings were closed for COVID-19. The contest involves both students and staff in an enjoyable community service activity and is organized by Carol Walsh, LMES Staff Member. To date the school has raised close to $9,000 for the rescue centers. Staff members paid $5 to enter pictures of their pets, and students and staff then filled out a ballot for 50 cents and voted for their favorite pet in each of five categories: Cutest, Best Outfit, Funniest Expression, Best Smile, and Prettiest Kitty.
