Public Health COVID Update

Sarah Strohman, Director of Palo Alto County Public Health, provided a brief COVID-19 update earlier this week.
According to Strohman, the current positivity rate in Palo Alto County is at 3 percent, with five new cases in the last seven days.
As of Tuesday morning, April 27, Palo Alto County has had 1,173 total cases of COVID since the pandemic began. Unfortunately, 21 individuals in the county have died due to COVID.
Vaccine
As of this week, 31.7 percent of Palo Alto County has been vaccinated. In the county’s 65 and older population, 72 percent have received vaccination, while 41 percent of those aged 18 -64 have been vaccinated.

Board Approves Property Tax Levy, Discusses COVID Vaccination Clinic

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors gathered Tuesday morning for a regular session meeting to discuss ongoing county business.
Sarah Strohman, Director of Palo Alto County Public Health, was not available for this week’s meeting. In lieu of speaking to the Board, Strohman sent a brief message explaining that last week’s COVID vaccine clinic for the county’s elderly population, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 17, had been canceled due to not receiving the expected shipment of vaccine because of inclement weather.

“We have seen a little bit of an increase,” began Sarah Strohman, director of Palo Alto County Public Health, providing an update on county COVID-19 numbers to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning. “We currently have 33 active cases of COVID-19 in the county and a 14-day average of 10 percent. We’ve had 19 deaths in Palo Alto County.”
Public Health held its first county COVID vaccination clinic at the VFW in Emmetsburg on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and according to Strohman, the clinic was very successful.
“We had our VFW clinic for 65 and older and vaccinated 200 people that day. It was a huge success. We’ve already got their appointments made for their booster vaccine in March. That worked very well.”

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors met for the first time in the new year Monday, Jan. 4 to make approvals for calendar year 2021.
A new Board Chair and Chair Pro Tem were chosen by the group, with unanimous approval to Linus Solberg for 2021 chairman and Keith Wirtz as pro tem.
