Remembrance and celebrations mark Fiji-Indian ‘Girmit-day’ event Thursday, May 13, 2021
Remembrance of the elderlies and celebrations of the spirit of courage and endurance associated with the Girmitiya fore-fathers of the Fiji-Indian community marked the 142nd-anniversary celebratory event of Fiji-Girmit Day held on Friday, May 7 at Malaeola Community Centre in South Auckland.
More than 1000 people attended the event to enjoy a colourful celebration of the most important civic event within the Fiji-Indian community with a number of cultural performances, speeches, award ceremony and snacks and food.
Among dignitaries who attended the event key were Minister Phil Twyford, Labour MP Dr Anae Neeru Levasa, National MP Melissa Lee, Chris Luxon, Simon O’Connor, Former National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, High Commissioner of India, Muktesh Pardeshi, Hon Consul of India Bhav Dhillon, Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon and Judge Ajit Singh.

A small initiative started by a couple of Auckland siblings to help new migrants into New Zealand has come a long way from humble beginnings 25 years ago. The Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust, started by Jeet Suchdev and Roopa Suchdev in 1995, recently commemorated the charity s silver jubilee in Auckland with a host of dignitaries, community leaders and invited guests.

Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust celebrated 25 years of its glorious journey of serving the community in a colourful event on Saturday, April 24, at Trusts Arena, Henderson West Auckland.
The commemorative event was attended by a battery of dignitaries, including High Commissioner of India Muktesh Pardeshi, Minister of Transport Michael Wood, Honorary Consul of India, Bhav Dhillon, Judge Ajit Sawaran Singh, District Commander New Zealand Police Karyn Malthus, National MP Melissa Lee, Labour MP Dr Deborah Russell, Chris Carter, Puketapapa Local Board Chair Julie Fairey, Whau Local Board Chair, Kay Thomas.

Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust celebrated Holi - the festival of colours with utmost joy and enthusiasm in Auckland and Queenstown.
The Auckland event was held on Saturday, March 27, at Roskill War Memorial, May Road, where the senior members of the Charitable Trust played Holi with flowers.
“Our senior members cherished the idea of safe Holi with flowers,” Jeet Sachdev, Bhartiya Samaj Chair, said.
“We thought to do something different this year along with usual play with dry colours. So we got flowers to be showered upon every member while they were dancing their hearts out to popular music,” Jeet Sachdev said.
