Signing of Armed Forces Covenant shows Swindon council s commitment to supporting veterans

DIGNITARIES from Swindon and Wiltshire signed a commitment to supporting armed forces personnel and their families around the borough. Representatives from the council, army, health bodies and education gathered in the rose garden outside the local authority s Euclid Street offices to sign the Armed Forces Covenant. Mayor Garry Perkins introduced and closed the short ceremony while dressed in full mayoral garb. He said: This is not just a piece of paper, it s a way of showing respect for our armed forces. It s a very important day for Swindon, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sarah Troughton said: Swindon has a long track record with the armed forces, going back to 1914 when 10 blasts from the Swindon Works hooter signalled the start of the war.

Members of Kidlington Round Table drove a lorry full of clothing and blankets to Contursi Terme, a village near Naples, then flew back eight months later to help rebuild the shattered region. Now four decades later, a message has arrived from the Italians thanking the Tablers for what they did. The story began in December 1980 when Colin and Pam Webb, in Kidlington, received a plea from a friend, Gabriella di Martino, Professor of English at Naples University, to help earthquake victims.

Jodi was one of eight lucky shoppers to receive $2,000 in cash prizes from entries collected between Nov. 27 and Dec. 18. Dana Dunn, Jennifer Ervin, Pam Webb, Kaycie Egner, Megan Musselmon, Monique Robb, and Niki Smith also received cash prizes. In addition to the weekly drawings, the Chamber gave out $200 in cash to shoppers tuning in to the live drawings each Friday that were filmed at participating businesses: Papsy’s Place, Alma’s Attic, and Water Lily’s SkinTherapy Spa.
