Now is the time for serious Democratic and Republican candidates to start building their support and campaign war chests to run for county executive. The latest example of the Budish administration’s ineffective, unresponsive stewardship is its approach to vetting sheriff’s candidates in seeming denial of a new charter requirement.

Cuyahoga County Jail Taking Dramatic Steps to Stem COVID-19 Outbreak

WCPN Cuyahoga County is searching for ways to bring the jail population below 1,000 to properly quarantine inmates potentially infected with the coronavirus. About 300 COVID-positive inmates and 69 staff members were out last week with COVID-19 illness or exposure, so the Cuyahoga County is taking several dramatic steps to stem an outbreak of the coronavirus in the jail. The Ohio National Guard has been called on to fill in for sick staff, inmates meeting certain criteria have been released, and the state’s restrictions on inmate transfers have been challenged in court. According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, the governor’s office agreed to loosen restrictions in response to the lawsuit, changing the required quarantine period before transfer to 10 days, instead of 14.

Interim sheriff David Schilling in two orders one sent to municipal courts and another to the state’s prison system said the release of inmates is necessary to stop the increase in coronavirus cases among inmates and corrections officers. Schilling called the steps “unprecedented.”
