They announced on Thursday the loss of 58-year-old Correctional Officer Luis Hernandez. They say Hernandez had more than 12 years of service with TDCJ was assigned to the Rufus H. Duncan Unit in Diboll. Previously he had served at the Gib Lewis Unit in Woodville. Officer Hernandez became ill with COVID-like symptoms, tested positive, and was hospitalized on March 8, 2021, they said. He was placed in Intensive Care where he died from COVID-related complications on March 31.

TDCJ correctional lieutenant assigned to Hamilton Unit in Bryan dies after contracting COVID-19 Texas Department of Criminal Justice and last updated 2021-01-15 22:11:59-05 BRYAN, TX â A Texas Department of Criminal Justice employee assigned to the Hamilton Unit in Bryan has died after contracting COVID-19. 57-year-old Correctional Lieutenant Treva Preston dedicated more than 16 years of service to the state and the TDCJ. She was hospitalized at a Bryan hospital on January 4 after testing positive for COVID-19. She died in the early morning hours of January 15. âTreva Preston is a prime example of someone choosing to serve,â said TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier. âShe was a training sergeant then Lieutenant who left a long-standing legacy at TDCJ. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice family will honor her service and grieve her loss. Our prayers are with the Preston family in these trying times. Treva Preston will always be remembered.â

TDCJ announces COVID-linked death of Lubbock Montford Unit officer A-J Media The Texas Department of Criminal Justice this week announced it is grieving the death of an employee of the Lubbock-based Montford Unit, which is being linked to COVID-19. Correctional Officer V Joe Landin, 54, had 25 years of service with TDCJ and was assigned to the Montford Unit, according to a news release from the TDCJ. He tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to a Lubbock hospital on Dec. 14. Officer Landin spent several days in an intensive care unit before he died Monday. Officer Landin leaves behind two sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren.
