Burnes Road food street to go traffic-free from January 10

Karachi January 7, 2021 Citizens will not be allowed to take their vehicles to Karachi’s Burnes Road food street from January 10. The decision to pedestrianise the well-known food street has been made by the Sindh government to facilitate the food lovers and to beautify the Old City area. Officials said the announcement was made after close consultation with the District South administration and the city’s traffic police department. They said several meetings had been convened by the Sindh government with the district administration and other relevant departments to formulate the plan. Talking to The News, Deputy Inspector General of Police Iqbal Dara said he had directed his subordinates to make frequent visits to the intersections surrounding the food street and mark the locations of diversion points to avert any gridlocks or traffic mess, particularly during peak hours.

Deputy commissioner and administrator DMC (South) Irshad Ali has announced the launch of new food street in Karachi. From 10 January, 2021, Karachi s iconic Burns Road food street will be designated for pedestrians to move around and enjoy yummy grub. Shahrah-e-Liaquat from Fresco to Court Road will be blocked by 7pm for traffic, daily, as specified by UC administration South. Vehicles coming from Araam Bagh to Fresco will be diverted towards M.A Jinnah road and People s Square instead. The new food street will start from Fresco Chowk and go all the way to Fatima Jinnah Women s College.

A notification issued on Tuesday [January 5] said that the vehicles won t be allowed on the street as a part of the government s initiative to pedestrianise it. The Shahrae Liaquat intersection from Fresco Chowk to Court Road will be blocked from 7pm onwards. Traffic from Arambagh to Fresco Chowk will be diverted to the MA Jinnah Road on the left and the Peoples Square on the right.
