So, it snowed.
I donât know about you, but I was pretty pumped. Last year, we didnât even manage to get an inch; this year â before Christmas even! â we got our first full-fledged, shut-it-down, donât-even-think-about-getting-in-the-car, wait-is-that-ice-too storm. And believe it or not, that storm helped Jefferson County, West Virginia, go viral.
Or, well, at least a letter did.
For those who havenât seen it yet (and I canât imagine there are a lot of you), Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Bondy Shay Gibson sent out a letter on Tuesday that read:
âFor generations, families have greeted the first snow day of the year with joy. It is a time of renewed wonder at all the beautiful things that each season holds. A reminder of how fleeting a childhood can be. An opportunity to make some memories with your family that you hold on to for life.

Fair warning if you are the kind of person for whom it would be easy to plant a “Frozen” earworm. I’ve had one since I read Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Bondy Shay Gibson’s letter to her school community Tuesday.
I remember a couple of months ago hearing young people slowly come to the realization that if schools had found a way to make learning remote, there might never even after COVID-19 be another snow day. No need for it. If it is unsafe for kids to travel to school, the vast majority of them now have everything they need to go to “school” at home.

In a year where everything has changed, a West Virginia superintendent decided to uphold one important tradition the first snow day. The educator s heartfelt letter announcing the district s schools, which are currently only open for remote learning, would be having a snow day on Wednesday has gone viral. For generations, families have greeted the first snow day of the year with joy, superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, Bondy Shay Gibson, Ed.D, wrote. It is a time of renewed wonder at all the beautiful things that each season holds. A reminder of how fleeting a childhood can be. An opportunity to make some memories with your family that you hold on to for life. Gibson said the entire district would be closed Wednesday for all students and staff, even virtually. The snow day call was made in anticipation of the monster winter storm that brought deadly conditions to the Northeast.
