BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Even before the first flakes fell, New York City’s first big snowfall of the season was doomed to be a gloomy disappointment for more than a million of its schoolchildren.
COVID-19 has robbed a lot from children in 2020, and in many school districts in northern climes it is now stealing the magic of the snow day waking up to find that school has been canceled and the day will be filled with snowballs and snow angels.
NEW YORK (REUTERS) - A winter storm marched up the US East Coast on Wednesday (Dec 16), delivering a disruptive blow to transportation systems and a welcome day off for some school kids, but not for many who have been learning remotely during the pandemic.
By mid-afternoon, the Nor easter had brought a wintry mix to Washington and wind-whipped snow to New York City, parts of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as it threatened a swath of the country that is home to more than 50 million people.
The sprawling system could dump up to 60cm of snow in an area stretching from eastern Pennsylvania to New York s Catskill Mountains, with less amounts of 30cm or more in the rest of the north-east, forecasters said.

A West Virginia school superintendent’s order to shut down class for the county’s first snow day has gone viral, a reminder of “renewed wonder” despite a grueling, often cruel 2020.
Bondy Shay Gibson, the superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, shared the directive Tuesday afternoon to shut down all instruction for a snow day Wednesday despite the fact that all schools are under remote instruction.
“It has been a year of seemingly endless loss and the stress of trying to make up for that loss,” Gibson wrote in her note. “For just a moment, we can all let go of the worry of making up for the many things we missed by making sure this is one thing our kids won’t lose this year.”
