Cathryn MacCallum Cathryn MacCallum began her career in development as a cheese-maker on a coconut plantation in Tanzania. Passionate about rural development (North and South) she became involved in the development education movement. She has more than 20 years experience of working as a research and programme manager in international development and development education, she has co-written a number of textbooks aimed at secondary school students on learning for sustainable living for the Zanzibar Government and Welsh Curriculum. She is currently a Director of Sazani Associates, a small international NGO based in Wales (with offices in Zanzibar and Belize) that supports sustainable livelihoods through participatory approaches to rural development. In 2009 she was put on the WGgreen list for her work in international sustainable development and sits on the UNESCO UK Committee. Harding University President David Burks met with Harding Academy teachers and staff Friday to announce the hire of James Gurchiek as superintendent and Bradley Francis as high school principal.  “The search committee and I have been very serious in our efforts to select the best people to lead Harding Academy,” said President Burks. “We prayed that God would answer our prayers, and I believe he has done just that. I have no doubt that we have found two people who will bring a Christ-centered approach and attitude to everything that they do.”  James Gurchiek has more than 25 years experience working with Searcy Public Schools. Prior to accepting the role of superintendent, he served as the principal for McRae Elementary. Gurchiek serves on the Arkansas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators, and as a Cognia State Council Member.

Teachers’ continuing professional development (CPD) has become a major focus within the school reform and school improvement literature because of the belief that student learning and success are due, in large part, to the effectiveness of teachers (OECD, 2009). In 2005, MOE/GES with support from JICA set the pace to operationalize CPD at the basic education level with series of engagements leading to a nationwide INSET programme from 2009 through 2012 before the policy was eventually enacted.
