More than 1000 lightning strikes have been recorded in the last few hours, as winter makes its move over parts of the country today.
MetService said up to 1200 strikes were recorded overnight. The radar and lightning network is getting a good workout this morning, a MetService tweet said just before 7.30am.
It comes as severe weather warnings and watches have been issued over a number of areas of New Zealand where heavy rain, strong winds and snow are expected, particularly in the south.

Cyclone Tauktae will further intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over the next couple of days and is likely to cause thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Sindh, including Karachi. The depression over Southeast Arabian has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm TAUKTAE and lay centered at a distance of about 1,460km south-southeast of Karachi, read the Met Department s alert.
The weather department said that the maximum speed of the winds sustained around the cyclone have been recorded at 70-90km/hr, adding that they are expected to reach 100kh/hr.

Outdoor activities have been made more appealing this weekend with the wild weather clearing earlier than expected in most parts of the country.
In Auckland, the overnight downpour has passed and sunshine is expected to stick around for the rest of the weekend.
The region s temperature is expected to reach 20C today and tomorrow, with westerly winds gradually easing through the day.
But not everyone will be free of rain jackets and brollies - MetService still has a heavy rain watch alert on for Taranaki and Gisborne regions.

The Big Dry in certain parts of the country continues to have an impact on the price and sale of store stock. Independent Whanganui stock agent, livestock commentator, farmer, rural real estate agent and Horizons regional councilor David Cotton said the continuing dry spell in Hawkes Bay, northern parts of Wairarapa near Masterton and several areas of the South Island were having a major impact.
