ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) Not only are fireworks celebrations back this year, but Rochester is also the first upstate city to host a drone show to celebrate the Fourth of July.
For the past few months, one company in Detroit, Firefly, has been teaming with the city to coordinate, design and build out a show that will illuminate the Rochester sky in an unforgettable, patriotic way.
News10NBC’s reporter Jenny Ly spoke to the city and the company behind the magic to learn more about how they pull off the show.
According to Firefly, it takes about half a day to set up for the show. Not one, but 200 unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as drones, will dance in a synchronized, choreographed manner, lighting up the warm summer night for 15 minutes the first of its kind for the city.

After a year of darkness and no July Fourth parades, festivities or fireworks, Rochester and many of its surrounding towns have announced plans for Independence Day 2021.
Most communities are scaling back events, in large part because the coronavirus pandemic made it difficult to plan them and book vendors. But fireworks shows are scheduled, including in the city, which also is staging a drone show.
Note that Penfield is hosting its celebration on Saturday, July 3.
