Daily Mirror - DGHS instructs Galle Police on final rites of COVID-19 victim

Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena has informed the Galle Police in writing to conduct the final rites of a COVID-19 infected person at Deddugoda in Galle according to previous circulars for the cremation of COVID-19 victims and to inform the Galle Additional Magistrate, Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana about these instructions. The patient succumbed to COVID-19 on December 19. Taking into consideration the Health Ministry circular for the cremation of COVID-19 victims, the Acting Coroner of the Galle Teaching Hospital, Chandrasena Lokuge ordered the body to be cremated on December 20. The son of the deceased refused to accept the remains unless the body was to be buried. The police and the relatives of the deceased requested the court on December 21 to issue orders with regards to the final rites of the person.

Dec 23, Colombo: Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Asela Gunaratne has informed the Galle Headquarters of Police Inspector in writing today (23) that the funeral of a COVID-19 infected Muslim resident of Deddugoda, should be conducted in accordance with the circulars issued regarding the disposal of bodies of COVID victims and to apprise the Galle Additional Magistrate of the instructions. Acting Coroner of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Chandrasena Lokuge ordered that the body be cremated on the 20th of this month, taking into consideration the circular issued by the Ministry of Health regarding the disposal of corpses of corona infected persons.

Posted on December 21st, 2020 Courtesy Adaderana The Galle Additional Magistrate has ordered for the body of a COVID-19 victim to be refrigerated instead of being cremated. Considering a request made by the relatives of the deceased, the magistrate has ordered the body to be placed in a mortuary refrigerator at the Karapitiya Hospital until the decision of the Committee appointed by the government is out. The deceased COVID-19 patient is a Muslim father of three residing in Dodugoda, Galle. While the Coroner of the Karapitiya Hospital Chandrasena Lokuge recommended that the body be cremated as per quarantine laws, the son of the deceased had stated that they will not claim the body if it is cremated.
